When people come to our house, they often comment on how they love older houses and all the molding. Truth is, our 1948 ranch didn't come with much molding. Most of it we've added ourselves.
I have two header beams in the house that are in plain view. I beautified these ugly beams with paint, trim and fleurs, and love the character they now add.
Here's my how to:
Beam Beautification 101
This beam was originally wood. (didn't take a good before pic of the beam 4 yrs ago, when my sister started painting it). Here's a pic of the beam last week.
Prime (if needed) and paint completely.
Then paint the trim. I used the thicker trim in this project.
You'll need a beautiful fleur (Lowes and Home Depot have decent selections).
Add the trim to the beam, after cutting the corners at 90 degree angles. Nail with finish nails, or a nail gun.
Find the middle and add the fleur.
....and once again, find all the able bodies in the house and have them start filling in cracks and nail holes with putty. Yup, this was our With the Kids Wednesday project this week! ...and yes, I know we're a day early, but I have plans for Wed and Thursday's posts!
Now sand the putty, and give it a couple more coats of paint!
The beam is now beautified!
Below is a picture of my upstairs beautified beam.
This project is easy and relatively inexpensive. I love the character it adds to the room!
