My Summer Mantel
(and it's with the kids Wednesday)!
Yes, I know WTKW is never on a Wednesday. I'm not really sure why that is. It just never works out that way...I just like how the name sounds.
Well let's start out by showing the before.....
My sister in law and I actually painted the fireplace black about 3 years ago, but I never gave it a second coat.
Are you wondering why my Summer Mantel is being posted in August!
This project has been on hold due to massive house renovation and cleaning projects!
I'm not sure if you remember my Spring Mantel? I loved that mantel! It was totally me! Symmetrical, a little over the top, lots of black and white, whimsical birds.....
This mantel however, was thrown together while I was getting the house ready to put on the market. I actually didn't want to even decorate it, I was so up-to-my-ears in other projects, but I knew I'd regret not giving it a little attention.
I'd been eyeing everyone's painted, wax-dripped wine bottles and wanted to make some for cheap and easy decor somewhere.....so why not on the mantel?
I picked up all the faux coral at Craft Warehouse on super-clearance this past fall. A great summer decor item!
The shells we brought back from our trip to South Caroline this past spring. I had many plans for them.....but it's been busy around here! I'm glad they found their way somewhere.
This yellow shell display was made by taking a scrap of a yellow board that I used for my Shelf to TV Console. I framed it with electrical tape and stood the shells against it. I needed some color and this was about all I had left for color in my back room. I don't buy much before I sell a house....the pickin's are getting slim around here!
The numbers were supposed to be a nautical touch....why would distressed number be nautical? I don't know, but they feel that way to me, and they pop against the dark grey and black bottles.
The moss-covered branches and the fabric scrap swag are from my Spring Mantel. I just took off the doilies.
I found these display boxes at a friend's yard sale for $4 each!
I love the coral in them.
....and I know this is picture overkill, but I really wanted to show it with a bit of my stenciled rug.
Does anyone else feel like they put in WAY too many pictures?
That pretty much sums it up!
My girl Chloe did help me search for branches that we never used and help me paint the coral a little whiter....and that's what makes this With the Kids Wednesday!
If your mantel was to tell of your summer.....what would you have on it?

Looks good to me Katie! I always love everything symmetrical to the point of driving my husband crazy!
ReplyDeleteYup, same thing at our house Danni! He called my last mantel the Spring Shrine :)lol
DeleteLove your mantle. It has come a long way from that original picture. It looks like you have had a fun summer. I guess our summer mantle would consist of wet bathing suits, little girls hair bows and games and books strewn about- xo Diana
ReplyDeleteThat mantel would sounds like the happiest!

Ι love the black painted brick!
ReplyDeleteThanks Olga....it was a husband/wife debate,that I won :)

It looks lovely! Your bottles turned out great and Miss Chloe is a doll!
ReplyDeleteThanks! Hope you had a good weekend on the west side of the state!

So cute! Love all your great ideas. My mantel would never tell of my summer because I'm boring and like it pretty much the same way all the time. But that suits a place where the weather never seems to change either, I guess. Or at least that makes a good excuse.
ReplyDeleteLiz
Liz...where do you live again? AZ?
DeleteI bet you could put together an AWESOME mantel, full of cool and quirky things!

I really am i love with these colors! And I'm happy that you won the "black painted brick" debate! In a word, its stunning.
ReplyDeleteThanks Stacia, me too! There was actually a lot of debating about painting over that wood paneling too! I'm glad I won on both! lol

Katie, the mantel looks awesome! I love everything about it - the colors, the symmetry, the painted bottles, the happy, happy fabric bunting and the shells! August is the hottest month in my country, so I think the summer mantel is at its peak, not too late at all.
ReplyDeletePS: The fire place is lovely, I don't think you need a second coat of paint because right now you can feel the texture underneath it.
Thanks! Sounds like you're another symmetry fan! Where do you live again? I never realized it was in another country!
Deletenever too many pictures! the look is fun and modern! the painted bottles look great. Love the gray/yellow combo!
ReplyDeleteHey Daniela! Hope you're having fun on your vaca! I love gray and yellow too.....maybe too much, it's starting to take over every room of my house!

Simply perfect! Yes, I always feel I need to edit down my pics...but love lots of pics on other blogs so I don't know why I bother :) Laurel
ReplyDeleteYou're right Laurel, I probably shouldn't worry about it either. I guess people could just scroll through faster if they needed :)

looks very pretty
ReplyDeleteThank you!

I love how original this is. Not the typical summer mantle at all! I also LOVE your fireplace/brick update. Most people would go with white, but I think the black looks AWESOME! Totally looking at my fireplace another way now!

Thanks Kylie! I would have loved to go white, but we still burn wood in it and I know it would have ended up so dirty so fast! Too bad, because I'm loving white mantels lately. Thanks for stopping by!
