Chalkboard Backed Open Cabinets

  Woohoo! Finished!....and I REALLY like them!



The before..... (obviously the cuboard doors were usually shut)


Looks like I actually took these pics while I was cleaning them out.


So, once I had taken the doors off and set the shelves up for "display". I later decided that they looked a little cluttery and that I needed them to make more of a statement in the room. The below papers are some stenciled wallpaper I made and some black paper. I was trying to decided between stenciling and chalkboard paint. Love the gray stencil, but it ended up being too busy for these huge cuboards!




Hardware removed, puttying done, 1/2 the chalkboard paint up! The counter is the reality of doing projects like this....especially when the project is redoing cupboards!




For painting, I used liquid sandpaper, since the paint is probably from the 1940's and I didn't want to poison the kids with lead dust! Then I just added paint. I've scooted plates and bowls accross them already and they haven't scratched a bit.




Then my favorite part....adding the fun stuff!






Had to save some room for chalkboard usage.

I really do love them! Yea for open shleving!

* For those of you wondering about open shelving and practicality. I feel the open cuboards help me to be more organized. I gave away dishes that I didn't love and made pull-out drawers in our lower cupboards for the food.  They store alot of food!  The baskets I made also help store the extra spices and packets.

    My open shelving in my kitchen is always neat too, since it has been pared down to just needed items.

    All I can say is WOW. I am so in love with this. Maybe because I have been on the fence about doing this in my own home. I have 1950s cabinets that I painted when I moved in and they are still, well...blah. They don't fit quite right either. Thank you so much for linking this today. You have inspired me beyond words.

    You have a great eye for decorating! I know that if I had open shelving, there would be a lot less stuff taking up room. I love that you used chalkboard paint on the back. It really puts the spotlight on the contents and presents them as individual pieces of art.

    well, I agree, beautiful! You did a great job creating little vignettes within the larger picture. We left our new cabinets open for several months, but I couldn't keep the dust under control. If I didn't use an item every day, it was dusty. I guess that is one of the realities of the desert. I love seeing your progress :-) Great Job!

    I saw this on Funky Junk Interiors' facebook and LOVE IT!

    I am also thinking of painting our kitchen cupboards (they were painted in the 1940's-so the liquid sandpaper is an EXCELLENT suggestion). Keeping cost in mind but still wanting long lasting quality...what type of paint did you choose? And what is the color of white...it is lovely.

    Julie -- I used Rust-Oleum Chalkboard paint from Hm Depot. I used liquid sandpaper, but I didn't pay too much attention to durability in the back, since the back of my cupboards don't see much wear and tear. However, for the shleves I used a water-based Colorplace indoor latex from Walmart. The color is Bershire White with a satin sheen. I use it on just about everything. I plan on putting some shelf liner on, at least where my dishes are.

    Thank you! I have used chalk board paint for the last 10 years at my store. Just about a month ago we painted over some 70's wallpaper and rubbed the chalk over it...ooh la la!!!

    I love the white and kept looking at very expensive paint. Great to know that yours is cost effective!

    These look fabulous!!! I too redid my kitchen and have open shelving ---- but you took it to a whole new level with the chalkboard paint! I really like it!
    And I hear you --- open shelving does keep you more organized (you can't really just shove stuff in the cab and close the door!).

    I like chalkbaord paint because it doesn't look to stark black. I has a "different hard-to-explain" apperance. I actually looks better after you've written on it and dusted it off. Very popular look right now (in my opinion). Plus, it was just a fun and different idea, and one of course, has the option of writing on them :)

    it should save your cabinets from the dirt and grease build up that happens with months of neglect. A little basic maintenance will keep your kitchen cabinets looking new and will keep you from doing a lot of scrubbing.Food Display Cabinets

    OHMYGOODNESS!!! You've given me the PERFECT solution to my super tight ~kitchen-reno project~! My house was built in 1973, and has those horrible, flat, wanna-be woodgrain, laminate doors. It will be wonderful to take down at least some of the doors of course, but painting the inside back with chalk paint is ~decorating genius~!!! LOL! I am so excited now. Thank you for posting this. I also have some accessories that'll pop against that paint. Now to surprise the hubby with your wonderful idea. Ha! Now that's a whole 'nother story! :o)
