Woohoo! Finished!....and I REALLY like them!
The before..... (obviously the cuboard doors were usually shut)
Looks like I actually took these pics while I was cleaning them out. |
So, once I had taken the doors off and set the shelves up for "display". I later decided that they looked a little cluttery and that I needed them to make more of a statement in the room. The below papers are some stenciled wallpaper I made and some black paper. I was trying to decided between stenciling and chalkboard paint. Love the gray stencil, but it ended up being too busy for these huge cuboards!
Hardware removed, puttying done, 1/2 the chalkboard paint up! The counter is the reality of doing projects like this....especially when the project is redoing cupboards!
For painting, I used liquid sandpaper, since the paint is probably from the 1940's and I didn't want to poison the kids with lead dust! Then I just added paint. I've scooted plates and bowls accross them already and they haven't scratched a bit.
Then my favorite part....adding the fun stuff!
Had to save some room for chalkboard usage.
Single cupboard shots.
I really do love them! Yea for open shleving!
* For those of you wondering about open shelving and practicality. I feel the open cuboards help me to be more organized. I gave away dishes that I didn't love and made pull-out drawers in our lower cupboards for the food. They store alot of food! The baskets I made also help store the extra spices and packets.
Fantastic job. I love the way all your white goodies show up against the black! And the way you've arranged the shelves - just perfect!
ReplyDeleteOH!
ReplyDeleteI just love it all!
My open shelving in my kitchen is always neat too, since it has been pared down to just needed items.
Love the chalkboard inside--you are stinkin' clever!
Your subway tile and brushed nickel handles are cozy!
Doncha just love coming in the kitchen?
Blessings on your day!
HUGS!

Amazing Job... Great ideas...You where so brave to tackle this project!
ReplyDeleteseriously fabulous idea...so unique and COOL!
ReplyDeleteAll I can say is WOW. I am so in love with this. Maybe because I have been on the fence about doing this in my own home. I have 1950s cabinets that I painted when I moved in and they are still, well...blah. They don't fit quite right either. Thank you so much for linking this today. You have inspired me beyond words.
ReplyDeleteMany Blessings,
Kelli
After paint my kitchen back splash with chalk board paint, I want to paint EVERYTHING with it.
ReplyDeleteI like how your accessories pop against the black.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!!!
ReplyDeleteI want to go home right now and tear off my cupboard doors!
I love the black and white!!
I just became a follower, so hello!
This is adorable! I love the way you decorated your cabinets too. Just found your lovely blog via Kim's party. I'm your newest follower and would be delighted for you to follow me back!
ReplyDeleteTammy
You have a great eye for decorating! I know that if I had open shelving, there would be a lot less stuff taking up room. I love that you used chalkboard paint on the back. It really puts the spotlight on the contents and presents them as individual pieces of art.
ReplyDeleteI love projects with chalkboard paint & it was so fun to see your take on it. It turned out great! I'm off to see more of your great blog.
ReplyDeleteWarmly, Michelle
This is a great idea! I love it...very inspirational.
ReplyDeleteI love it. Was a bit worried about something busy in there...but the black is just perfect! (Like I should be worried about your decorating style....I know it's really the other way around.)
ReplyDeletewell, I agree, beautiful! You did a great job creating little vignettes within the larger picture. We left our new cabinets open for several months, but I couldn't keep the dust under control. If I didn't use an item every day, it was dusty. I guess that is one of the realities of the desert. I love seeing your progress :-) Great Job!
ReplyDeleteI love this! I wish I had a kitchen where I could take the doors off the cabinets, but it would show all my junk, not a gorgeous display!
ReplyDeletei am featuring this at somedaycrafts.blogspot.com. Grab my "featured" button!
Fantastic idea- they came out beautiful and functional! I love how the dark background looks too~ Would love if you would come share this at Feathered Nest Friday! :)
ReplyDeleteVery nice, I never would have thought to use chalkboard paint inside cupboards! It looks great, makes all your stuff really stand out!
ReplyDeleteTania
*Gasping, heart fluttering* I'm in love! That looks absolutely amazing! This would definitely be one way to force myself to stay organized. I want those cabinets!!!
ReplyDeleteLooks fantastic - wonderful inspiration!
ReplyDeleteVERY pretty! What a great statement it makes! And you did a really nice job accessorizing, which is not always easy!

ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I'm brave enough for open shelving, but I love the chalkboard background. What a wonderful idea! And I love your placement on the shelves!
ReplyDeleteWow this looks great! I never would have thought to use chalkboard paint!
ReplyDeleteA-mazing!!!! I never would have thought of that! It's pure genius!
ReplyDeleteI just love this, what a fantastic look!
ReplyDeleteI love the open shelving and the chalkboard paint was a great idea! It looks great!
ReplyDeleteWhat a neat outcome! Your area doesn't look dark at all with the black which I would have anticipated. Very cool!
ReplyDeleteI've shared this as an SNS #73 highlight on FJI Facebook. :)http://www.facebook.com/pages/Funky-Junk-Interiors/175378011140

I saw this on Funky Junk Interiors' facebook and LOVE IT!
ReplyDeleteI am also thinking of painting our kitchen cupboards (they were painted in the 1940's-so the liquid sandpaper is an EXCELLENT suggestion). Keeping cost in mind but still wanting long lasting quality...what type of paint did you choose? And what is the color of white...it is lovely.
I'm loving it! Fabulous job! I'm following you now!!
ReplyDeleteReally great transformation, the black is perfect.
ReplyDeleteJulie -- I used Rust-Oleum Chalkboard paint from Hm Depot. I used liquid sandpaper, but I didn't pay too much attention to durability in the back, since the back of my cupboards don't see much wear and tear. However, for the shleves I used a water-based Colorplace indoor latex from Walmart. The color is Bershire White with a satin sheen. I use it on just about everything. I plan on putting some shelf liner on, at least where my dishes are.
ReplyDeleteHope that helps!

What an original idea and executed beautifully! I really love the colors you used.

I don't think I've seen chalkboard paint used so originally before. It looks so sharp! Very inspiring project. Visit me sometime. Take care.

I'd love to have you follow me:)
Thank you! I have used chalk board paint for the last 10 years at my store. Just about a month ago we painted over some 70's wallpaper and rubbed the chalk over it...ooh la la!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the white and kept looking at very expensive paint. Great to know that yours is cost effective!
These look fabulous!!! I too redid my kitchen and have open shelving ---- but you took it to a whole new level with the chalkboard paint! I really like it!
ReplyDeleteAnd I hear you --- open shelving does keep you more organized (you can't really just shove stuff in the cab and close the door!).
So much better with the black! I would have never had the guts to do it! Great job!
ReplyDeleteAwesome idea! I love the look of open cabinets - so much more homey. Great job!
ReplyDeleteDid you know addicted to decorating featured you in you in a recent post? I was so surprised - and pleased - to see your kitchen in another blog! Too funny when bloggy land intersects.

Fantastic. I love it.

I love the look of open shelving in the kitchen. It's the dust factor that gets me. The black and white contrast looks wonderful though!
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love the look! I'm not brave enough to do this in my kitchen but I would love to give this a try in my laundry room! Thanks for inspiring. I will be featuring you today :D

I, love this it looks fabulous what an awesome idea.
ReplyDeleteThis is just plain beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThis looks awesome. I really like the look of open cabinetry when it is done well & kept organized. I'm just curious as to why you chose chalkboard paint instead of just a regular paint in the same color? Will you be writing on them a lot? I'm a new follower & hope you might follow back.
ReplyDeleteCAS
Hi CAS,
ReplyDeleteI like chalkbaord paint because it doesn't look to stark black. I has a "different hard-to-explain" apperance. I actually looks better after you've written on it and dusted it off. Very popular look right now (in my opinion). Plus, it was just a fun and different idea, and one of course, has the option of writing on them :)
I enjoyed your blog!

it should save your cabinets from the dirt and grease build up that happens with months of neglect. A little basic maintenance will keep your kitchen cabinets looking new and will keep you from doing a lot of scrubbing.Food Display Cabinets
ReplyDeleteFantastic job!!! Looks awesome! I saw where you said "I gave away dishes that I didn't love and made pull-out drawers in our lower cupboards for the food." Do you by chance have a post or tutuorial about making the pull-out drawers?? I *really* need to do this but have NO idea where to begin.... :(
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy to have found this post. My husband just told me hours ago that he wanted a wall cabinet to get rid of our clutter in our kitchen. I now have an inspiration. Super thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeletethese cabinets turned out fantastic, love them.
ReplyDeletei would love to feature your project on my revival monday, please let me know if this would be ok with you,
lauren
Love it! Looks great with everything popping!
ReplyDeleteIt looks fantastic! Great job!
ReplyDeleteOh Soooo lovely!! LOVE the chalkboard paint! Such a wonderful back drop for your newly organized cabinets!! Thanks for the inspiration...I'm ready to start ripping doors off now :)

Just love these! Stopping by from Not Just A Housewife ... good luck!
ReplyDeleteWow! I love the chalkboard backs! I recently painted two bookcases and moved them to my kitchen, but have been tossing around the idea of painting the backs. This might work. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteNice job organizing everything on the shelves. The black really makes all your unique dishes and items really stand out. I love this look, very vintage yet chic.
ReplyDeleteOHMYGOODNESS!!! You've given me the PERFECT solution to my super tight ~kitchen-reno project~! My house was built in 1973, and has those horrible, flat, wanna-be woodgrain, laminate doors. It will be wonderful to take down at least some of the doors of course, but painting the inside back with chalk paint is ~decorating genius~!!! LOL! I am so excited now. Thank you for posting this. I also have some accessories that'll pop against that paint. Now to surprise the hubby with your wonderful idea. Ha! Now that's a whole 'nother story! :o)
ReplyDeleteTeri
So beautiful, I love how the black makes all your items stand out. You've got a real knack for making the display practical and pretty. Saw you on the Whisperwood Cottage challenge, good luck!
