Bike Pillow

This is the latest to my LR pillow collection.
I needed a pillow that wouldn't make these old chairs (that need to be recovered badly) look any older than they already are! So I used linen, that I stained in coffee to get the desired color.

To make this pillow I recovered a large down pillow.

I cut three pieces of fabric.
To find the size needed for the front piece, I measure the pillow from side seam to side seam and added one inch on each side, since I wanted fabric to overlap the sides by about an inch on each side. I did the same for the top and bottom.

For the two back pieces, I took the measurements from the front piece, and added an extra two inches vertically, so I could over lap by approx 1.5 inches and have some seam allowance. I like to make these backs for pillow covers, so they are easy to take off and wash. Once sewed, I add Velcro to keep it shut.

I sewed leaving approx 1 inch for a border, and then frayed the edges. I wanted somewhat of a worn grain sack look, so I added the lines about 2 inches in from the seam on each side, using a permanent marker and a ruler.

To get the bike I searched Microsoft for clip art (I'm sure you can find about anything you want free on line also), and found a bike pic I liked, printed it, cut it out, traced it in pen in the middle of the front pillow piece and then went over the line with permanent marker. I then used black fabric paint (from Joann's) to color in any lines that I wanted filled. (Make sure to put some cardboard in between the pillow layers while painting if you paint it after it's sewed).

I also made a treble clef pillow for the chair opposite.

Original inspiration: One King's Lane. ....maybe not as perfect, but much less I'm sure!!!

  2. We are bicycling nuts,( we cycle all over the world), and I bought a great bike pillow at Home Goods. My daughter/blog partner wanted one, too, but they sold out where she lives. I am sending this to her. I am sure she will make it.
