Christmas Tree Skirt. Make it in the time it takes to watch a movie!

This is the first year we've had two trees, so it was time to make a Christmas tree skirt.  I had actually seen this idea, as a no-sew Christmas tree skirt, and someone hot-glued the ruffles on...just a thought if you don't want to sew it.

Tutorial:
1.) Put in a movie (I choose Pirates of the Caribbean with Mr. Practical)

2.) Measure out the size you want your skirt to be. I used a Christmas tree skirt we already had and added some space on the outside, since I wanted a bigger one.

I used some fabric that doesn't really match anything in my house, and that I seem to have TOO MUCH of. The fabric at this point in the project won't be seen when the project is finished, so use something up, even if it's an old sheet.

#3.) Cut out the Christmas tree skirt, and the hole for the tree, and a slit so you can wrap it around the tree. (fold the material in half to get a more cylindrical circle.)

#4.)  Start cutting strips of whatever fabric you have would like to use. (I think this would be an awesome project for fabric scraps!
I cut the strips 4.5 in. in width and as long as the fabric would go. I had burlap and some extra slinky black fabric. I thought it would be a fun mix.

#5.) Start pinning and pleating your fabric strips around the material you cut out for your skirt size.  This is what you'll do for ALOT of the movie, pin and pleat, pin and pleat.

I didn't sew any edges of the material, or even the ends. I thought it would look good with some raveled edges.

#6.) Sew the ruffles that you pinned on the material.

I sewed the first three layers by hand, since I wanted to just sit and watch the movie. The second two I sewed on the machine after the movie. You could also hot glue them, while you watch the movie.

There ya have it....my shabby, and chic, new Christmas tree skirt. I like that it's a little different and was made out of things I already had around. I think one would look great made out of an old white sheet!

  7. I love the ruffles! A ruffled tree skirt is on my to-do list, but near the bottom, so I don't know if I will get to it this year. However, knowing I could complete it while watching a movie is an intriguing thought...

  9. Beautiful job! (You make it look so easy.) And I like the idea of sewing it instead of gluing it together.

  11. Anonymous,
If you notice the pictures at the begining of the post, you'll see that I folded I cheated a little by folding a tree skirt I already had in half, and then cutting around that ;) Best way I could think of to get a good circle.
