If you are new to Creatively Living, this year, I've decided to post on how to include your kids in renovating/decorating every Wednesday.
For With the Kids Wednesday #2,
I'm going to show you our new kid art that has found a home on our new downstairs gallery wall (post on that later when I finish up some trim work!)
I could write many entire posts on how everyone is using such fun kid art in decor now days, but I know you've seen it and so I'll just stick to our latest piece.
This was the original painting. This monster is about 4.5 ft x 4.5 ft! HUGE! It was only $4 at the GW and I figured I could never find a canvas, or even buy a big piece of wood that big for the cheap!
I thought it would make a real statement on a gallery wall, so I painted it white, and the border black.
Can you tell the gallery wall was in it's beginning stages at this point?
Then I hired this incredible free lance artist. I paid him in room and board.....and food!
I had to give him some space guidelines, hence the tape.
Definitely liking the picture! What do you think of Chloe's and my hair? In case you're wondering, yes, we do have that many kids in our family.
Then I had to use my manual Cricut...ok, so I printed and cut the letters out by hand.
and I measured the space and glued them on with glue stick....yep, I wrote glue stick. It actually works very well and you have time to re-adjust the lettering while it dries.
This isn't the most lovely picture, but I wanted to give you an idea of how big the picture is! Please look away from all the 1/2 completed trim work!
These pictures aren't the best. I need to learn how to take better pictures in dim basements!
Here is a more "pin-friendly" version.
This post was made possible by Joel, my favorite free-lance artist! (and his mom)

ReplyDeleteVery cool! Kudos to Artist Joel. :-) I wasn't as wisely frugal as you and ordered several canvases from an art supply store, and I hope the kids and I have a big painting party or two. The house needs art work!
ReplyDeleteRHome410, that will look fantastic!

Now isn't this something? I've got plenty of budding artists who could do something darling for my home! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLove the kid art. For the longest time I had my daughter's version of our family hanging. She is now in her 20's and I'm saving for her. Laura
ReplyDeleteranks right up there with my watercolor painting of the bunny that mom has in her dining room :)
ReplyDeleteLove it! I should share the kid art I have up on my walls. And yeah, another mom with 5 kids!
ReplyDeleteWell I think its lovely. Just as good lookin as some of those "what-were-you-thinking" artists that sell paintings for $$$$$$.
ReplyDeletehaha! Totally!

Such a great idea!!! I am so pinning this! I had to leave a comment because you mentioned the dim basement. I have a very dark family room (limited natural light). The light scoop was the best 30 something bucks I've spent in awhile! I'm not being paid to say this, I just love it so! :)
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I'm following on my way out. I love your blog!
I'll definetly have to check that out!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks!

Katie, I love this idea! I think it's so important to showcase kids artwork and love how you made it part of your decor. Thanks for sharing at this week's party!
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting! Yes, Joel felt pretty special that he was "hired" to draw the picture! It was really cute.
DeleteThat is just adorable!!! Love it! He must feel so special!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely Adorable~ I also treasure the art of my Grands....

Have a wonderful weekend

So cool, will you please give Joel my admiration of his work. Love how you repurposed the original painting. Your wall gallery is going to be beautiful. Make sure you get a "manager" for Joel soon, he's going to be making big money soon as an artist. Thanks for sharing Joel's inspiration at Sunday's Best!
ReplyDeleteohhhh my goodness I LOVE your artist. What a sweet project. I LOVE it! Everything about your cheap find and sweet up-cycle! Thank you so so much for the inspiration I LOVE it! :o)

{and thanks so much for linking up!!!}
That is such an amazingly sweet project, I love it!!! I think we'll try to have my little one do something like that when he is a bit older.
ReplyDeleteI just love this! I wish you showed it 10 years ago though when my kids were "little". What kind of paint did you use to cover the canvas? I'm dying to know so I can have my last little one make one. thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi Sherrie, I used water-based latex (that I use about everywhere) to paint over the original painting. I gave Joel a permanent marker to draw the picture.
DeleteI love this! My kids would love to make a work of art like this! I found you through Sew Can Do. Thanks for sharing! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Lindsi, I'll put you on my sidebar :)
ReplyDeleteThanks,
