Problem area:
Behind the TV
I actually had a picture that was worse, a lot worse, but accidently deleted it off my card :(
To sum it up, before I built this console, our TV sat on the floor....along with the surround sound, and everything else! Ya, big mess...messier than this! (yes, those are old school bunny ears.)
Phase 1:
Fixing the Problem Area
I ran to the Goodwill to find something that might hold a TV. I actually arrived 5 minutes before they closed...ran in, saw this "shelf thing" for eight bucks, figured it was about the right size, and totally solid. So I bought it and left!
Phase 2:
Building the Console
I brought the shelf home....cut up a board that I had from our old pantry, and started putting them together.
I cut a first bottom layer out of some old plywood and the side strips and yellow bottom, out of the old pantry shelf.
...and since I want this TV console to sit along the wall, and also wanted to be able to pull it sideways when we watch the TV, I added some wheels. I also thought it would be nice being able to turn it whichever direction, while I'm working on projects.
Phase 3:
Beautification
I made some homemade chalk paint, and gave it some sanding. Then I polyurethaned with some clear semi-gloss.
Now onto the edited shots!
...and how did it end up working out???
Great!!!
Arrows pointing to the surround sound speakers that are being stored in the back and in the bottom storage area. Along with the DVD player.
Remember that open top part in the "shelf thing". It now holds the base for the surround sound and the random remotes.
Here is a close up of the small shelf I added, which holds the DVD player and the long surround sound speaker.
I also Gorilla Glued some plastic hooks I had lying around to wind cords on.
....and one more shot of the end result.
Shelf thing turned TV console!
....and it only cost me around $30!

Well that was just awesome! Love the little DVD shelf on the bottom. And those clips on the back? Genius! What a great find and a great project! Thanks for sharing it!
ReplyDeleteLove the clips in the back. I don't even want to show what's behind my TV. It's a mess of cables, wires, and surge protectors. My goal for after we move is to clean that up somehow, and your hooks are a great idea! Thanks!

This is so cute!! I'm tweeting about it, today, and sharing it on my facebook!
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job! I love the practicality of it along with the cuteness! Did you post a tutorial on your chalk paint?
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
Nif
I didn't. My neighbor had given me a bag of something that she uses to make chalk paint. I'm not sure what is was exactly, probably unsanded grout. I didn't really even measure. She said a little would go a long way, so I mixed and painted. It worked wonderfully. However, I did the same thing for the next project and it didn't stick as well. There are many tutorials on the internet. I have read that the No Minimalist Here Blog has a great recipe!

Amazing! What a gorgeous way to house some not-so-attractive parts! Glad I'm not the only one with a tangled mess of cords, uh, well now I may be the only one but not for long ;)
