The Reading Nook Project: The Curtains

The curtains are now finished in The Reading Nook Project. I'm REALLY liking how they turned out. The rod and curtains set me back only $15.

If you didn't see my first post about the Reading Nook Bench click here.

Here is what this space looked like less than a week ago. Can you say Junk Catch-All?!

For the curtain project, I took the rod seen below and painted it white.

I found it in the Lowes clearance for under $5. Always check the Lowes clearance sections. When they want to get rid of things....they GET RID of them. I've found things for incredible prices!

Next, I took these panels that I purchased at a yard sale for $2 each and added the black to them. You can see the before and after below. The black material was from a black window valance that I purchased at the Goodwill for $2. I cut the top third of the valance off and added it to the top and added the remaining 2/3s to the bottom. Less hemming for me, since the valance was already hemmed!

I then added some ribbon I had on hand with some craft glue. The internet says you can use this on material, and the hot glue was making a mess, so I went for it. It seems to be holding up nicely so far.

I wanted to add something unexpected, so I purchased this super-fun trim at Hobby Lobby. It was 40% off and cost me around a dollar/yard.

Final curtains.....LOVE!

It's coming together nicely! Quite a transformation this week!

The moral of this post is:  Purchase really good deals when you see them.

Now, before your husband doesn't let you look at my blog anymore for writing that, I'll state a few tips about this line of thinking.
1.) Buy things you're 99% you'll use. I always purchase cream, white, black and gray curtains and material when I see them for REALLY good prices($1.50/yrd or less).
2.) Buy things that would normally cost a much more $. Long curtain rods under $5 I can pretty much guarantee that I'll use, and they would usually cost me at least twice this much!

This has really helped keep down the price of this nook!

Now for some background art, some pillow making (pictured pillows are mainly from my living room), adding some RED, and some lighting!

    1. No worries, because the pillows are actually from my Living Room that is black, white, gray and yellow. This space will eventually be white and black with red accents. I'm just swiping the LR pillows until I make some for this space :)

    1. Different places and different Lowes....or so I've noticed. I can think of 2 Lowes that have specific clearance areas and one that just keeps clearance items in the larger isle ways, and on the end of the shelves.

  11. LOVE them!!! I wanted to tell you, that if you have a JoAnn Fabrics close, they have great black frames that are matted for 11X14 pics,HALF off, at $15 a piece. I got them to do in my Husband's office at work. He is the CFO for a cash register company. I got pics of vintage calculators, an abacus, and cash register off the internet and put in them. You could do upclose pics of books or the covers of classics in them for your art and spend next to nothing! I got all the photos at wall greens for $10!

    1. Awesome!!! Thanks for the tip! I thought about doing a picture collage in there, but I have one just "down the wall" from this nook, and I'd like to do one above my hubs desk, which is directly across from it. I've been debating (and asking all my family members, who probably don't really care lol) about different things I should hang above it. I think I'm going to go with a branch, a READ sign and some butterflies or birds flying away....sounds weird, but in my mind it looks cool! haha
