Metal Sphere Lampshade

This one you might hate....
or you might love....

Hmmm, a metal sphere lampshade....um, where did I come up with this??

Inspiration pictures:

Yes, this one is SUPER COOL by Potterybarn

I'm sure you've seen all the metal open lampshades...

This one is BEAUTIFUL by Bella Nest (she is awesome and guest posted  with this on my blog). You can read about it HERE.

My decor star: Vintage Revivals. It's hard to see, but she has a metal open lamp shade on the desk.

I know you've seen all the globe lamp covers going on...Love them! These are some used in Young House Love's kitchen reno.

A globe lamp by Potterybarn.

So....what about a combination?

Maybe a open metal lampshade, the shape of a globe?

Well,...let's try it.

Here's my basement lamp. We needed more light, but if you remember, there's A LOT going on already in this room, so we need something simple. A typical lampshade would be too much.

I found these babies at the GW. I was originally going to use them as a hanging globe style lamp cover, but when my "low basement light problem" came along, I decided to give them a try on the stand-up lamp.

I would really love to have some mad welding skills.

I can just imagine all the awesome chandeliers and rod iron projects I could create.

But my HS welding class training wasn't going to cut it for this project.

And the hubby was out of town...

So who else to ask, but my dad :)

It's really great having a dad that lives on a farm, and knows how to weld and has all the convenient machinery!

Um, Dad....I have a little project that I was hoping you could help me on...

I'm sure it would just take you a minute (ok...maybe a little more).

Then I had to rewire the lamp. Good Ol' Martha, will teach you how to rewire a lamp HERE.

Ya, my parent's said, "well, that's different".

and I had to agree. It is different.

But, I might be on to something here....

because I kind of like it,

and once you see it in the basement, next to my TV entertainment rolling thingy....that's still being made,

and the cute plant and plant holder.

You'll realize that it's a great place to have some light,

and that a shade would overwhelm the space,

and that my slightly strange, metal spherical lampshade....

is just perfect :)

Lamp pictures when it's in it's "real home in the basement" to come!

  5. I love it! I have a father-in-law who is always willing to help too, but he never really likes the outcome and says things like "that's very unique, Danni." but he always helps anyway!!! Love the GW find and the way you figured out what to do with it! Very cool!

    1. Thanks again Carol. I like it. I don't think it was a big hit, but it will go well in it's place downstairs. :)

  8. Neat idea! Does the brightness of the bulb bother you? I do think it's really cool looking! Would you share it here?

    1. Glad you like it. I'm still toying with the idea of adding something else to it. The brightness doesn't bother me. I actually liked it downstairs without any shade at all, and then thought of adding the metal. I do want to get a cuter bulb though. :) Thanks for stopping by!

  14. Love it! Have you considered using an Edison bulb? It may take the light down a little but the filament is so cool to see when you don't have a shade. They have them at Home Depot now instead of having to order them!

  15. You're so on track with this thing..but may I add my two cents? First off, love it. Love the idea and think it was executed beautifully. BUT...how about getting oil-rubbed bronze (or is that black?) spray paint to cover the brass switch and like Laura Lynn suggested, an Edison bulb. I think it would elevate it to a much more sophisticated level! Great job!

    1. You are so right on that! This was one of those projects that wasn't bad enough to be a "craft fail" (in my opinion), but it is pretty lacking! It's sort of odd, and there's just not enough "coolness' in it to make it ok. Yes, I thought of an Edison blub after I posted...or painting the gold. I also think (if I would have had more time), I should have added more metal to it....like maybe some metal circles attached horizontally (sort of like the metal spheres that everyone is using for entryway light fixtures right now??) Anyhoo. Great suggestions! I totally agree :)
