I am breaking from basement projects to bring you my newly finished, revamped yard sale lamp.
I found this lamp base at a yard sale for $3 last summer.
It was the end of the day.
Hadn't anyone else seen this lamp bases' super potential?
Was everyone else really seeing outdated brass?
Because all I could see was this!
Now the lamp shade, I grabbed out of my neighbors garbage can.
I figured I would "yarn" it.
Is that a verb? Yarning?
Well, I first saw this done ombre style on Vintage Revivals, and loved it.
"Yarning" a lampshade is really easy. I simply used a little craft glue along the seam and started wrapping. When it was time to change to the next color, I would alternate colors on every other row and then I would use two rows of the new yarn color before completely switching. The arrow is showing where there are two strands, and the first arrow shows that I measured and marked the lamp shade before I began so I would know where to begin mixing the colors and where the new color would completely take over.
Here's a close-up.
I colored it to match my GW boat picture.
Office reveal coming soon...(hopefully!)

Katie, How do you do it? Oh my goodness gracious, this is too cute for words! What a steal- 3 bucks for that base! I really need to keep my eyes out for things like that, in love with it!! And the yarn shade, awesome idea! Loved it- two thumbs up from me!!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I like how it turned out too. The yarn wrap was really easy. Good way to inexpensively recover those old shades I guess :)
DeleteHappy Wednesday!
--Katie
I was just looking at my tired lamp shades this morning and wondering what in the world I could do with them..... this is perfect! Thanks, Katie! Keep the great ideas coming! Love 'em!
ReplyDeleteWow! Love it!! The yarn wrap looks kind of complicated, but since you said is easy I'm gonna pin it in my to do projects!
ReplyDeleteSuper easy! Check out Vintage Revivals' project too. I just looked at hers and it seemed to make sense. I sometimes think that the way I explain things makes it seem more complicated. lol

wow, I love it. Love the yarn what a great look! Sorry I couldn't party with you this week! My blog is getting a redo/up and a lot of behind the scenes work is going on, i.e. propagating to another web host. Started Monday and not finished yet. I'll see you next week!
ReplyDeleteThe lamp looks fab!
ReplyDeleteWow, talk about a transformation. I'm gonna try that. Thanks for sharing.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great lamp! I love that you got the vase for $3!! What a deal. Megan
ReplyDeleteBeautifully done! What a great transformation.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of the yarn wrap. I have several lampshades that need some help. I might try this on a couple of them.:)
ReplyDeleteLove lOve loVe lovE! I am also inspired to do something similar. I cant find lamp shades I love in stores and I only purchase stuff I love, its a rule. Im for sure doing this now, great idea!Bythewayjenngray.blogspot.com

ReplyDeleteWhat a find~ You are one luckie duckie!!!
ReplyDeleteYou find the best stuff and then turn it into even "bester" stuff! Love the yarn on the lampshade.

ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this at Romance on a Dime!!
The problem is, that when you see items for their "true potential", you can think of ways to use just about everything at the GW and yard sales, and that can lead to wanting to buy way too much stuff! lol

ReplyDeleteLOVE this yarn shade! I featured this today on Sew Woodsy!
ReplyDeletewow i REALLY love this idea! I have been trying to think of ways to revamp a lampshade other than painting and this is so fun and textural and still light. Does it still allow plenty of light to shine through? Thanks for a great idea!
ReplyDeleteIt's not as light as a creme lampshade, but it still works great for the desk.

That's a great lamp makeover - who knew all it would take is white paint and yarn! Love the ombre effect you created on the lamp shade.
