The Window Wall Curtain Facelift for Around $10. (no sew)

I am a sucker for any neutral color curtain at a yardsale!

The truth is, you can make them so beautiful and unique for next to nothing....

You can stencil, embellish with trim and ribbon, add patterned material,
and really, although I can, I'm not a big fan of sewing.

So here was my latest "yardsale curtain window fix" for around $10.

I found some basic creme tab topped curtains at a yard sale a summer or two ago, for $3/pannel. They looked pretty much the same as the picture below.

Curtain express

I was inspired by these Pottery Barn Pom Pom Fringe Curtains. (and this is a Craigslist picture, because I couldn't find them on their website for the life of me....I guess they don't sell them anymore?)

Here is my version.

Like I mentioned. I'm not a fan of sewing, so shortcuts are welcome in my home. Especially if it means not having to drag out the machine!
Really, who wants to drag out the machine, when you can just use this?!

Pin the pom pom fringe on the curtain (I just worked on the curtains as they were hanging) and then take out a section of pins at a time, glue the fringe on the edge, press with your fingers to adhere it well, and then re-pin the fringe as it's drying. (this part takes under 15 minutes).

My next project was to somehow create a valance or faux roman shade for the window. It seemed to be such a focal point on the wall, that it needed some sort of shade, so no one would just be looking at the metal window well that you could see through the window.

I tried my black patterned fabric.....too much "going on" in this space for anything else patterned.

I tried creme fabric.....too much creme, boring.

So I tried something else neutral.......burlap.    Perfect. It added some texture, warmth, and dressed the little window up just enough without being overwhelming.

I just bought a spring rod from Walmart (around $2.50). Then sewed a simple seam (only sewing involved on this window dress up project, although you could get away with using hot glue, or maybe even the craft glue).

I left the fray on the bottom..... because I love fray, or whatever it's called.

Then I measure about 2 inches inside the edge of the curtain and added some shiny ribbon. This made the burlap look so much more classy. I just cut the ends of the ribbon diagonally and placed it all together to create this boarder. I once again, glued it on.

Just right....
(it doesn't look so see-through in real life, but it was hard to get the right picture)

Another tip: I even used the craft glue to hem the bottom of the curtains!

Pricing (or close to it):
Pom Pom Fringe: 30% off at Hobby Lobby: under $7
Piece of burlap.....super cheap, since a yard is around $2.50
Ribbon: You can get it at Hobby Lobby 40% off around $1
Spring Rod: around $2.50 at Walmart

Great project!
1.) Super cheap
2.) I only had to sew one seam (you could probably get away with hot gluing it, and that's why I'm considering this project a "no sew" project.)
3.) Much improved look!

  2. Katie- Those turned out really cute. I am the opposite way- I think sewing is so much easier (and less messy for me) than gluing! lol I can't imagine doing the good job you did using glue! Great job!!!! xo Diana

  5. They turned out great, love the pom pom trim I would not have thought to use tacky glue, good call I would have spent at least 30 minutes sewing. my machine hates me. It jams up every 5 inches or so.

  15. Love the pompoms, they add the perfect touch of fun & whimsy to the curtains. I never would have thought to glue trim to curtains - good to know it can be done because I'm definitely NOT a sew-er! And burlap for the faux roman is a great idea too - it adds some nice texture, but as you said, isn't too busy.
