Summer Pillows.....The Cheater's Way!

These are no "show pillows". This is a tutorial for those of us who have random leftover vinyl, hand-me-down pillows, and a sewing machine that doesn't handle 3 layers of vinyl well.

....ok, maybe this is only me.

There was a part of me that wanted to just go out and buy some decent looking outdoor pillows this year, but since I had everything to make some for FREE, I couldn't resist.

I used some left over marine grade vinyl from our built-in cushions in the kitchen.

1) I cut out a piece of vinyl a bit larger than the pillow, (because I'm not using a pattern, I will just cut and trim as I go.)
2) I wraped and pinned around the piping.
3) Then sewed on the inside of the piping.
* This will make your piping noticeable on the front side of the pillow. You could recover new piping, and cut apart the old pillow, but I like using the existing material because it helps keep it's form.
4) I then cut a back for the pillow out of the vinyl material (basically a square with rounded edges.) Once again, trimming as needed, and hot gluing in the seam of the piping on the back part of the pillow.
5) Lastly, I cut stenciled words out of material scraps I had, and hot glued to the front. This was actually the most difficult part, so if you have a better way to get the words on, go for it!

A total "cheater's way" of pillow recovering.

These pillows aren't perfect....they are far from it! My machine was acting up too, so I'm not putting these in any talent shows...just showing you a quick and easy way to recover some pillows and use the existing piping. Especially if you're using vinyl for the outdoors or kitchen!
