Making a Faux Throw....on the cheap

I'm not sure why, but I've wanted to put houndstooth everywhere lately. It's very possibly the chill in the air, or it could be the pops of huge houndstooth print that I'm seeing every now and then that I love, but whatever the reason, I felt my office re-do called for a houndstooth throw!

Not wanting to pay for the experiment to see if I would even like it, I had to come up with an inexpensive way to make a throw. I'll call it the faux throw....I guess you still could use it, but it's really not that big, it just appears to be a normal sized throw, or you could make a normal sized one!
I took my coupon to Joann's (happen to have one that was 20% off the purchase). Picked out some thick wool houndstooth...(love). This way, there wasn't an ugly white side. It was 3$ off a yrd, which brought it to about $9/yrd.  I bought 1/2 yrd.

I wanted it to look like a purchased throw and not a strip of material, so I cut off the raveled end (which was actually sort of cute, I just wanted it to be more defined) and then started fraying the edges.

I would suggest fraying until you have a good 1.5 -2.0 inches of frayed edge. Possibly even more with thicker fabric for a more dramatic look.

My fringe looked like this when I was finished fraying. I am contemplating if I should have made it longer.

Then I took each color section  (you can't see the black sections because of the black background, but they actually alternate with white and black).and took the first string in it and made two knots at the top, so it would have a finished look to it.

So, there ya have it. You can have a faux throw (with a coupon most likely) for under $5! I think they warm a space, add character and can bring a lot of personality to a room!

Wouldn't it go so nicely laid across the end of a bed!
