With the Kids Wednesday #1 (Putty Buddies)

I made a note in my blog goals this year, that I would have "With the Kids Wednesday".

I wanted to include my kids in more of the renovation that I do around here.

Reasons for this:

1.) I tend to be a "work alone" sort of person...problem is, with home schooling, a little dietetic work, and constant house renovation (and now blogging), I'm ALWAYS working.

These cuties won't live with me long. Most of my life and theirs, we will live apart (sort of sad) and I want them to remember that during this time, my life was about them, and that we did fun stuff together...and boring stuff....ok, just spent time together!

2.) I want them to learn renovation skills!
because.....

3.) I have 5 of these little buggers and I would like their help!

So our first

With The Kids Wednesday

included the 3 oldest kids helping me putty my bedroom base boards (not alot of fun things to post about putting walls, unless there are cute kids involved).

To not let things get out of control, I used one kid at a time. I had them each take one wall with me. I quickly had them go wash their hands afterwards, and reminded them (about
10 times) not to touch anything on there way to the bathroom.

This wall is basically finished, but you can see that we puttied in between the quarter round and baseboard I had just put up, and in any space between the wall and the baseboard.

This went really well. It took each kid about 15 minutes, and we got to talk one on one about all sorts of things, (music, someone that cheated in a game at Sunday school, football, etc.).

.....and the talk was one on one (which is rare in this house of 5 kids).

My Challenge: This week lets include our kids!

  1. Good for you! Get them to help you finish projects. I did a little of that on Saturday while I was cleaning out my craft room to make some room for a big metal shelf (one of those with five shelves to put stuff on-not that pretty). I had the girls work on scraping some paint off of their stool while I spray painted some pop can boxes to put my canned soups in.

Have you seen that? Take a regular 12 pack cardboard holder, cut out a rectangle at the far side, put new cans in the back and use the cans in the front first. Free can rotater (my in-laws drink A LOT of pop). Other shelves are for crafting things and a little supply of gifts that I got on sale for kid birthdays and things. My room is much better organized now. =)

  2. Ahhhh, doesn't it feel better to be organized! I always have the urge to organize this time of year. When we lived in HI, all the Japanese people did there spring cleaning in January (or right before). I guess the new year is supposed to start fresh and new. I feel like it always starts looking like Christmas threw-up everywhere! lol I should do the same with my cans!...good idea!

  3. That's awesome. I should do this. Except I let my 6 year old help me paint and the first few seconds he dropped it on his toes and I was like "ok we are done" lol!
I need to find tasks they can do that won't wreck my house. sigh

  4. haha...Katy, I know what you mean. I have asked them to help me paint before. It ended up being MUCH more stressful than puttying!

  5. I love this idea! You're right, kids will grow up sooner than we would like, and it's great including them into your projects. Bonding time with mommy no matter what you're doing is the best!

  6. that's awesome!!! I'm a work alone type of person too and sometimes it would be much faster to do it myself than to have my daughter help.. But to cherish those moments with her... priceless :)

  8. Aimee, OMGosh, that is so how I felt when I realized I had "Applied" everything, without a way of totally going back (I think I'm too used to Word and Photoshop...they have a back button!)

  9. What a great idea! I have to work on involving my kids in things too, but it's hard because they're so little. I bet your kids loved getting messy and helping out mama!

Thanks for linking up @ Feature Friday Free-for-all!

  10. I love getting the kids involved...and you are right, they are with us for such a small amount of time. My daughter decided to help me putty for the first time when she was 1. Not by my choice. I had a brand new container of putty out in the bathroom for a project. In her defense she had just had her first birthday...and well, a brand new container of putty does look an awful lot like frosting. GROSS! She took a good scoop with her finger and ate it. I was in a panic! The guy from the company who I quickly called to see if she was going to die or if her insides would seize up...well, I really don't think he believed me. I can honestly say at 8 she hasn't touched it again. I will have to get her involved in my next project and remind her of the story!
